North America’s Oldest Medieval Ruins Are Older Than You Think, and Aren’t Where You Think

January 25, 2026January 25, 2026

Few realize that North America has medieval church ruins that go back to the 12th century. All of them are in Greenland.

🔹 Garðar Cathedral Ruins date back to 1126 AD. See: https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/gardar-cathedral-ruins

🔹 Hvalsey Church dates back to 1300 AD, and is the best-preserved Norse ruin in Greenland. See: https://visitgreenland.com/activities/hvalsey-church-ruin/

🔹 The oldest church in North America, Thjodhilde’s Church (aka Brattachurch) dates back to 1000 AD! See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brattahl%C3%AD%C3%B0

Isn’t history fun?
