The flowery words and the diplomacy might all become regrettable for France, Germany and the West.
As I’ve been saying, the West should be proceeding ahead with extreme caution with the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and Sharaa– unless France and Germany are weighing out Sharaa and the HTS in person to get a better read on them.
Nonetheless, being nice to Islamists doesn’t mean they will be nice to you in the short or long term. — RdM
DW — Germany’s top diplomat Annalena Baerbock and her French counterpart met members of Syria’s rebel-formed transition government. The pair are the first EU diplomats to visit Syria since Bashar Assad’s ouster.
Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said Friday, Europe will support Syria’s transitional government in Damascus if the political talks include all ethnic and religious groups in the country.
“A political new beginning between Europe and Syria, between Germany and Syria, is possible,” Baerbock said.
