The Lebanese Civil War (1975 – 1990) is complicated and fascinating (and, of course, it is connected to what is happening in Lebanon today).
Anyone who knows the convoluted factors and events that led to the Civil War will find this “pre-war” 1970 Thames TV report interesting and one of the most insightful looks into what was happening at the time and what led up to the Civil War.

The video link will take you to the part of the film report where the Thames TV news team gets opinions on the country’s tense situation from a group of Lebanese men and women hanging out at the beach in Beirut.
More intriguingly, during this interview, a redheaded Lebanese man speaks at length. What the report doesn’t say is that that man is Dany Chamoun (26 August 1934 – 21 October 1990), a Maronite Christian, the younger son of former President Camille Chamoun, and brother of Dory Chamoun. Dany became a prominent Lebanese politician and a military leader of The Tigers (1968–1980), a Christian militia.
Dany was murdered on October 21, 1990, at age 56, along with his wife and two of his children.
Did the Thames TV crew know they were speaking with Dany Chamoun, or did they have no clue?
