There are reports coming in today that Wagner Group, the hybrid PMC, is leaving Mali.
One report says that “Wagner Group” is “leaving” so to speak while its rebranded form, The Africa Corps (TAC), is officially taking over, albeit in a more advisory role.
If the “Wagner Group” is indeed officially being declared defunct and replaced by TAC, it’s interesting news.
If the Russian PMC in whatever entity it is now is leaving altogether, that is amazing news.
More information is needed to be clear as to what is happening.
🟢apa reports today:
PMC Wagner is withdrawing from Mali, the company’s press service said, APA reports citing Pravda.
According to the press service, “for 3.5 years, the orchestra has been fighting shoulder to shoulder with the people of Mali against terrorists.”

♦️The North African Journal report a few days ago, ‘Sahel: Russia Reorganizes in Mali: Wagner Withdraws, Africa Corps Moves In’. RE:
After months of behind-the-scenes talks, Russia has managed to phase out the Wagner Group in Mali and replace it with a new force called the Africa Corps—a clear sign that Moscow is reworking its playbook in the Sahel. Wagner’s fighters, once relied on by Mali’s military rulers for their no-nonsense approach, are either leaving or being folded into this new, more tightly managed Russian operation. So what’s really changing? On the surface, the Africa Corps isn’t expected to fight on the front lines. Instead, they’re there to train local forces and gather intelligence. But analysts say Russia’s broader goals haven’t shifted—they’ve just become more polished, more official, and potentially more difficult to push back against.

The Wagner Group was reorganized and rebranded for its African operations. The Africa operation is important to the Kremlin for both strategic and resource interests. The information I’ve received says that the “Wagner” contract with Mali remained in effect as the “Wagner” contract while the company had been reorganized, renamed and rebranded as The Africa Corps (TAC). So it was business as usual.
Let’s see if this news is really about Wagner and/or TAC, i.e. Russian PMCs leaving, or if it’s just a new contract under the new name TAC.
The fact that people continued to call the Wagner Group “Wagner” even after it was disbanded by Putin shows the power of branding.
Erik Prince’s Blackwater company dissolved long ago, but people still refer to him as the founder of ‘Blackwater’ and his company as ‘Blackwater.
