I will be frank, the video below of those American troops marching… Not good.
I remember a couple of former Royal Marines whom I had worked with who said they hadn’t done much drill. One said there was no need. Is this true about the Royal Marines?
US Marines can do some very good drill.
“The Old Guard” at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington are impressive! I’ve seen them several times.
There is this old Roman saying, “Drills are battles, and battles are drills.”

🟢 BFBS Forces News — US military parade raises eyebrows among drill aficionados. Is British best?
To drill or not to drill…
Military drill done well can act as a grand statement of intent for the nation. It screams – look at us here – imagine what we’d be like on the battlefield.
BFBS Forces News reporter Tim Cooper has filmed military drill around the world for 15 years. Here are his thoughts on whether to drill or not to drill?
That certainly is the question!
Addendum (22 June 2025):
This out to be point blank: The US troops on the march were celebrating the US Army’s birthday. This was a celebration of the US military force, not a politicized matter; it wasn’t a celebration for the President or anything else. For those who think that this lacklustre performance of US soldiers on the march was some sort of political statement, as I’ve said before, prove it. If it is a political statement, it’s disgraceful to the US Army, to its members, to its history, its veterans, and its great fallen. Let’s be clear, it was a US Army birthday commemoration. However, I still believe the US troops were simply out of drill practice, ergo the performance we saw.
