What many do not understand is that insurgencies typically need to be self-sufficient to survive and continue the fight. Outside support helps, but this is not always the case. ISIS and AQ have survived on their own terms for a long time, for example.
Guerrilla warfare 101 calls for being resourceful, where weapons and supplies often have to be captured from the enemy. It’s risky business, but it must be done.
Consider that Geronimo of the Ndendahe Apache, as one small example from history, fought the US and Mexican armies, bogged them down and drained incredible military and government resources, and also fought other tribes, for 25 years with no outside support.
Meanwhile, a recent ADF report, 20 May, ‘Report: Weapons Looted From Militaries Fuel Sahel Jihadist Violence‘ spells out the same thing:
Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) used drones loaded with explosives when they killed 12 Cameroonian Soldiers and wounded 10 more in a March attack on a military base in the northeastern Nigerian town of Wulgo. The Soldiers were part of the Multinational Joint Task Force working to combat terrorism in the area.
Supply chains for such weaponry are limited in the Sahel, but terror groups linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State group often use military weaponry seized during attacks on African militaries to perpetrate further violence.
This is according to a new report by Conflict Armament Research (CAR), which found no evidence that terror groups can access weapons such as assault rifles, battle rifles, grenade launchers, machine guns, mortars and rocket launchers directly from outside of the central Sahel. The United Nations has passed several mandates specifically prohibiting the sale or supply of weapons to countries in conflict or those with poor human rights records.

Cirka World Services — Al-Shabaab Parades Victory in Aadan Yabaal, Defiles President’s Image, Flaunts Captured Military Gear
In a brazen display of dominance, Al-Shabaab militants have released chilling footage from the heart of Aadan Yabaal, a town freshly wrested from government hands. The video shows jihadists tearing down and defiling a poster of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in the town center, mocking the administration’s authority.
Even more damning, the militants proudly showcase a pristine military transport vehicle, allegedly seized from the fleeing Somali National Army. As the government clings to empty rhetoric in Mogadishu, militants are now planting flags in the dirt and daring anyone to stop them.
